Teeth Cleaning in Mt. Vernon

At Danville Family Dentistry, our teeth cleaning in Mt. Vernon is done in our offices annually. We also perform periodontal cleanings for those with deeper gum issues that need a more aggressive cleaning. The two procedures are separate and slightly different from one another. A regular cleaning, also called a prophylaxis, is recommended for patients who have healthy teeth. A periodontal cleaning is for those who have suffered bone loss or who have pockets within the gum deeper than 4mm.

We recommend teeth cleaning in Mt. Vernon for patients who are not currently suffering from bone loss, infection, or periodontal disease. Teeth should be healthy and there should be no bleeding, receding areas or gaps where the spaces of the roots of the teeth are exposed. A regular dental cleaning removes tartar, plaque and even stains from teeth above and slightly below the gumline. We recommend patients come in for at least one to two cleanings per year or when there is a significant amount of plaque and tartar buildup. Having annual cleanings can help prevent gum disease and tooth decay that can lead to gum disease.

A periodontal cleaning is different from a teeth cleaning in Mt. Vernon. Those patients who have suffered periodontal disease that results in bone loss and deep gum pockets that go past 4 millimeters should have a periodontal cleaning. Patients with bleeding gums and exposed root surfaces or existing periodontal disease should also have this type of cleaning. To maintain proper bone health, reverse gum disease and keep gums healthy, a procedure called periodontal maintenance scaling is done. It removes tartar and plaque below the gumline down to the gum, bone and root. After measuring the pockets, they are then irrigated with an antibacterial medicine if needed. This type of cleaning is done a few times per year and depends on the amount of plaque and tartar buildup and how frequently it accumulates. If bleeding or inflammation is present, a periodontal cleaning should be performed as well. Chronic inflammation of the gums has been shown to be connected to overall health and heart disease or diabetes. Keeping the gums healthy should be an important part of everyone’s dental routine.
