Crowns In Danville

The terms dental crowns and caps are synonymous. Crowns are typically used to restore a tooth's function and appearance following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has become so advanced that large portions of the tooth must be removed, crowns are often used to restore the tooth. Crowns are also used to attach bridges, cover implants, and prevent a cracked tooth from worsening, or an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve an aesthetic use and are applied when a discolored or stained tooth needs to be restored to its natural appearance. Crowns are fabricated in a laboratory and are made of porcelain baked onto a metal substrate, all-porcelain, or many of the new ceramic materials developed.

Crowns can also be used for several other restorative and aesthetic purposes, including to:
  • Protect a tooth following root canal treatment
  • Anchor and attach a dental bridge
  • Cover and complete a dental implant
  • Enhance the beauty of your smile
  • Improve a misshapen tooth
  • Strengthen a tooth that is fractured or weak
  • Support a large filling when little natural tooth structure remains
Preparing and placing a crown usually involves two visits. During the first visit, your tooth is trimmed and shaped to receive the crown; an impression of your tooth is then taken, and a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth. The impression is sent to a registered dental laboratory to fabricate a lifelike prosthesis. During the second visit, your crown will be permanently cemented into place.
